10 things you (surprisingly!) can’t do in Manchester

Manchester is a bustling city with a lot to offer. There are endless things to eat, drink, see and do; it’s no wonder the city was voted the best place to live in the UK in 2019. But for all that Manchester has to offer, there are still some things you can’t do in the city. From the bizarre to the down-right impossible, here are 10 things you can’t do in Manchester.

Don’t drink in public places

Manchester is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, with a great nightlife scene. However, there are some things that you cannot do in Manchester, and one of them is drinking in public places. This may come as a surprise to some people, but it is actually against the law to drink alcohol in public places in Manchester. If you are caught doing so, you could be fined or even arrested. So if you want to enjoy a drink or two while out and about in Manchester, make sure you do so in licensed premises such as a bar or restaurant.

Don’t cycle on the pavement

In Manchester, it is against the law to cycle on the pavement. This may come as a surprise to some, but it is important to remember for both the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. Cycling on the pavement can be dangerous for both cyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists are more likely to collide with pedestrians, and pedestrians are more likely to be injured by a cyclist riding on the pavement.

It is also illegal to ride a bicycle without lights at night. This is another safety measure that is in place to protect both cyclists and pedestrians. If you are caught cycling on the pavement or without lights, you could be fined up to £500. So, remember to stick to the cycle lanes and make sure your bike is properly lit if you’re cycling at night!

Don’t litter

In Manchester, it is against the law to litter in any public place. This includes throwing away cigarette butts, food wrappers, or any other type of litter. If you are caught littering, you could be fined up to £100.

Don’t sing loudly in public places

Manchester is a vibrant and bustling city, full of life and energy. However, there are some things you should avoid doing if you want to blend in with the locals. One of those things is singing loudly in public places. While Manchester is home to several world-famous music venues, such as the Manchester Arena and the O2 Ritz, public singing is generally not tolerated. So, if you’re out and about in Manchester, keep your singing voice to yourself!

Don’t put up flyers or posters without permission

In Manchester, you cannot put up flyers or posters without permission. This includes public property, such as street poles and bus shelters. If you are caught doing this, you could be fined.

Don’t get naked in public

Manchester is a city full of surprises, and one of those surprises is that you can’t get naked in public! While there are plenty of places to get naked in private (including some fantastic spas), getting naked in public is against the law. So, if you’re thinking about stripping off to enjoy the sunshine or going for a skinny dip, think again!

You can’t drink in public places

While you can enjoy a pint in most pubs and bars across Manchester, you might be surprised to learn that you cannot drink alcohol in public places. This includes parks, streets, and even some outdoor seating areas of restaurants and cafes. If you want to enjoy a drink outdoors, you’ll need to find licensed premises with an outdoor area, such as a beer garden.

You can’t cross the street outside of a crosswalk

In Manchester, you can’t cross the street outside of a crosswalk. This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s against the law in Manchester. So, if you’re trying to cross the street to get to your destination, make sure to use the crosswalk.

You can’t sit on the steps of the city hall

If you’re looking to take a break in the heart of the city, you might want to find a seat elsewhere. It is technically illegal to sit on the steps of Manchester’s city hall. The building is private property, so technically, you can be asked to leave.

You can’t sleep in a park

If you’re looking for a place to catch some shut-eye in Manchester, the park is not the place for you. While there are plenty of green spaces to enjoy in the city, overnight camping is not allowed. So if you find yourself feeling sleepy after a long day of exploring, be sure to head back to your hotel or Airbnb for some rest.

You can’t skate

There are a few things you can’t do in Manchester, and one of them is skate. You can’t skate in the city center, and you can’t skate in the suburbs. There are a few places you can skate, but they’re all indoors.
